5 Specific Ways to Lead with Vulnerability
We talk a lot about leading with vulnerability. But what are specific ways to do it? Each of these skills requires you to make a tiny "reach" toward others. That reach is what we call vulnerability.
Share your imperfections
Let people get to know the real you. No one's perfect, and sharing our imperfections invites others to relate to us.
Ex. I'm a total fidgeter, I do my best, but I just can't sit still!
I've always felt embarrassed because I have trouble with American idioms, growing up in a different culture.
Ask small personal questions
Get to know the quirks of others. Ask them little questions about who they are.
Ex. How did you learn to type so fast, I'm blown away?
What inspired you to adopt a second puppy from the shelter?
Practice appreciating daily
Appreciate others (esp. employees & co-workers) for specific qualities and actions as much as you can until you're a natural.
Ex. You have such a good eye for design, I love having you on my team.
Thanks for helping me out last minute today, I feel good knowing you've got my back.
Give honest feedback
As you appreciate others regularly, also communicate clearly about requests and feedback.
Ex. Thanks for publishing my video. I'm seeing one caption error though, where the word "interdepedent" is misspelled. Will you fix that now and make sure to spell check your captions in the future?
Call forward their genius
Everyone wants to be recognized and witnessed in their unique gifts. All you have to do is invite them forward.
Ex. Would you mind if I give you a shout out at the meeting today?
You have a beautiful voice, I would absolutely love if you'd sing a song during the closing circle of the workshop.
