I ended my business partnership. Here's what you can learn.

What's one of the hardest things I've had to do as an entrepreneur?

Ending my business partnership.

It took almost a year to complete, and it was messy at times. But I feel lucky enough to still be close friends with my ex business partner Harmony and to love her very much.

I think because it's called a "business" partner, people get the sense that it's just a logistical relationship.

But it's actually more like being married to someone.

I talked to Harmony every day for 3.5 years. Every. single. day. We know things about each other that nobody else knows. We used to have "toilet meetings" where we'd be so deep in discussion that we'd keep talking through the bathroom door.

The more inner work I do the more I understand that there's a word for that, "intimacy". And even though I'm very good at pivoting and making it through hard times, if I'm honest, ending that relationship was pretty disorienting for a while.

I'm really glad that we've continued to be close friends, but I want to give a shout out to the emotional intelligence I wish I had years ago: if you're getting into a business partnership, make sure you're ready to marry that person!
